Groton and Peacham Oct 8, 2015

A friend and I explored some spots in and near Groton State Forest in Vermont and, on the way home, looped through Peacham. The fall foliage was nice in Groton, but Peacham was surprisingly late. We arrived in the dark at Seyon Lodge State Park as the eastern sky showed signs of life and light returning.

As photographers set up at the shore of Noyes Pond, I captured a beaver with a very high ISO and a touch of flash.

I made a square panorama of the pond with overhanging branches and then tried some “classic” shots at the water’s edge with rocks in the foreground. But I didn’t care for any with the foreground rocks — the pond was too choppy for good reflections. So I photographed mostly on shore and through foliage along the shore.

Everyone was photographing the pair of chairs by water’s edge, so I tried my hand with them.

My favorite spot of the day was Groton Falls, a waterfall in the Wells River along VT 232 just north of US 302. We arrived at Groton Falls while the falls were still in shade and somewhat misty. After working them for a bit, the sun broke through and I got a nice photo with sun streaming through. Below is an overview of the falls. We explored along the southern shore of Ricker Pond. I love photographing backlight.

My favorite shot at Kettle Pond was also sun coming through leaves — leaves of a large hobblebush.

We climbed the short steep trail to Owl’s Head and got a look back at Kettle Pond.

A loop to the north took us to Mollys Falls Pond. There was some nice foliage along shore.

From there it was south to Peacham’s East Hill where we got photos looking down at Peacham village.

A quick stop in East Topsham on the way home revealed the foliage still had some time to get to its best colors.
