Memories of Nepal
Every Photo Tells a Story

This series of pages is mainly for myself and a few friends, but if you enjoy reading the words and seeing the photos that is a bonus. Some of the pages are long, some are short.

I’ve traveled to Nepal four times. When I think back on my trips, a number of events, places, and especially people come vividly to mind. Almost all of these are associated with photos. As I often tell my wife, Jann, I only remember things I photograph. So here I am sharing some vivid memories through my photos from these trips. In a way, every photo tells a story. At least to me.

Interestingly, the only person that has been with me on all four treks is Chhongba Sherpa. He is very probably the best guide in all of Nepal. He has become a good friend. Leeli Bonney, Denise Coriell, and Maila Rai have been me on three treks.  Alawa Sherpa, Stephen Plume, and Carolyn and Milt Frye on two treks.  You will meet these people and others on the following pages.

The photo above is one of my favorites.  It is from the fourth trip as we hiked along the Khumbu Glacier from Luboche to Gorakshep not too far from Everest Base Camp, which is off the the right of the photo. The large peak is Purmori on the border with Tibet. An avalanche from it, triggered by the 2015 earthquake that killed nearly 9000 in Nepal, killed 19 at base camp and seriously injured Chhongba Sherpa. Below Purmori is the brown Kala Patthar (18,514 ft), a seemingly-insignificant pile of rocks with a fantastic view down on Everest Base Camp, most of the Khumbu Valley, and across to some fabulous mountains. Ascending it is normally a 2 hour hike. Below Kala Patthar is the gray Khumbu Glacier.  You may be able to make out a line of trekkers in the lower center.
