Gangapurna Lake

At least a week’s walk from almost anywhere and situated at 12,000 feet in the Annapurna region of Nepal, Gangapurna Lake is somewhat remote to say the least. This beautiful glacier-fed lake suddenly appeared directly below us as we hiked up and up over the monotone rocks during a “rest” day of our trek around the Annapurna Range. We approached a knife edge and peeked over. A beautiful blue-green lake greeted us far below. I couldn’t help one impressionistic rendering here.

I also created some more realistic photos of this amazing place just across the Marsyangdi river from the village of Manang, Nepal. Here is a photo taken from the Manang side of the river of the lake and the trail we hiked up to the Chongkar Viewpoint to get a closer-up view of the glacier. We hiked at the very edge of the cliff above the lake then switchbacked up the trail that has a bit of snow on it.
