Venice is the city of canals. These are crossed by 400 bridges which join most of the 118 small islands. Except for a tiny area at the end of a long causeway, there are no cars. There are almost no bikes, since you can’t ride them far before having to carry they over a bridge. Most everything moves by foot or boat. Sometimes it gets crowded.

The boats include:

tour boats like in the center of this photo,

water buses,

water taxis seen here lined up waiting for business,

barges to move goods and supplies,

private boats with outboard motors,

boats that are powered by long poles and human muscle,

and, of course, gondolas.

Here is a slide show of the canals and the people and boats that use them.
