Woodies at Pompy

Last Tuesday and Wednesday turned out to be really good days for Wood Ducks in the Pompy area of Norwich. I had found some there a few days earlier, so I was hopeful.

Around 8:30 am Tuesday, I found a pair of wood ducks on the east side of the road at Campbell Flat.

After they slowly wandered farther from the road and nearly out of sight in the tall grasses, I drove to the far end of the fields and turned around. As I was heading back, I saw them fly to the west side of the road.

The light that morning was soft, as can be seen from this photo taken at Campbell Flat after the wood ducks were too far away for good photos.

When 8 wood ducks flew overhead just after 8 am Wednesday, I took that as a good sign. Here are 5 of them.

This time I found wood ducks in the Ompompanoosuc River between I-91 and Campbell Flat Road. The morning was calm, so I got some nice reflections. Here are a few of the photos I took of this pair. Perhaps they were the same pair I photographed the day before — I can’t tell one wood duck from another of the same gender.
