First Day of Spring 2013

The day before the first day of spring we had a nice snowfall. Once our looong driveway got plowed, I made plans to travel all around the Upper Valley and photograph the new snow.  As I headed out the early sun was quite nice—I knew it wouldn’t last—and the snow was already being blown off the trees. Conditions were good here and now, so it took me an hour to get out of Metropolitan Downtown Etna.  Here are some of the photo I took in Etna yesterday within 2 miles from my home. The tracks in the field are ruffed grouse.

Eventually I made it to Norwich and Hartford, VT and down the  river a bit to Plainfield. The light went from sunny to cloudy and back again. It was a good morning—the real spring will be here soon.

Hoary Redpolls

Once there was a large, strong football defensive lineman who would grab the whole backfield and toss the players away until he found the one with the ball. This might be similar to the random approach I took to photographing redpolls during the snow Saturday. I wasn’t really studying the birds but merely taking photos from time to time when one perched in a nice spot and I happened to notice. I was busy trying to finish and post a long story about a trip to Nepal in 2011. I was also trying to enjoy our winter visitors from up north who have been hanging around our yard for the past several weeks in groups of between one and three dozen at a time. And I was enjoying the snow which we were finally getting.

Yesterday I saw a post from Spencer about checking your feeders for hoary redpolls so figured I should download and check my photos to see if I got any. Here are three photos of what I believe are 2 or 3 different individuals that seem to have hoary redpoll characteristics.

Merry Christmas

A few days before Christmas we had 6 visitors. Here are four of them.

We took a hike along Mink Brook to the Connecticut River. Ice was just starting to form. We heard the loud insistent call of a tufted titmouse and found it among the chickadees high overhead. A red ornament graced the walk. Further along was a blue one.

Then a few inches of wet snow filled our yard. It stayed on the trees only a short time but it was a pretty sight while it did.

On Christmas eve morning the sky was filled with color.

Spring Snow

Spring revival of our long-dormant garden is on hold until the snow of the last few days melts. A few weeks ago the temperature pushed 80, but yesterday we had a wintery scene in our yard. A thin layer of ice that formed overnight was covered with snow. Still, spring is on the way and daily we get reports of more and more bird species reappearing.
