King Bird Sanctuary Trail
The trees are in glorious bloom right now at the King Bird Sanctuary in Etna, NH. The birds are arriving with some passing through and some settling in to raise a family. I just posted some photos from this great spot on a new Trails of the Upper Valley page HERE. The next week or maybe two will probably be the best time of the year to visit. Directions are on the Trails page.

First Day of Spring 2013
The day before the first day of spring we had a nice snowfall. Once our looong driveway got plowed, I made plans to travel all around the Upper Valley and photograph the new snow. As I headed out the early sun was quite nice—I knew it wouldn’t last—and the snow was already being blown off the trees. Conditions were good here and now, so it took me an hour to get out of Metropolitan Downtown Etna. Here are some of the photo I took in Etna yesterday within 2 miles from my home. The tracks in the field are ruffed grouse.
Eventually I made it to Norwich and Hartford, VT and down the river a bit to Plainfield. The light went from sunny to cloudy and back again. It was a good morning—the real spring will be here soon.
Great Horned Owl Chick
Dave Merker alerted me a an owl nest not too far from where I live. So I had to go and check it out. One very cute, but not all that active, great horned owl chick was present in what looked like a very ample nest, perhaps one built by a great blue heron. Here are some photos from late in the day yesterday and early this next morning.
Merry Christmas
A few days before Christmas we had 6 visitors. Here are four of them.

We took a hike along Mink Brook to the Connecticut River. Ice was just starting to form. We heard the loud insistent call of a tufted titmouse and found it among the chickadees high overhead. A red ornament graced the walk. Further along was a blue one.
Then a few inches of wet snow filled our yard. It stayed on the trees only a short time but it was a pretty sight while it did.

On Christmas eve morning the sky was filled with color.
The previous post has a panorama that you can click and spin. The version below—not taken with an iPhone—allows you to zoom in a see details. The images is composed of 27 separate photos.
