Namche Bazar

From the suspension bridge over the Dudh Kosi it was a serious and unrelenting two-hour uphill climb to Namche. Finally we turned a corner and Namche Bazar magically appeared on the hillsides above us.

Approaching the city we saw more clearly the Tibetan Market with blankets, shoes, more blankets and other goodies. Traders walk four days down from Tibet and camp in small smoke-filled tents at the market until they sell enough to justify the trek down and back.

The image above is a bit misleading—Namche is basically in the shape of an amphitheater. Here is a view from part way up one of the side rims. Our Khumbu Lodge (Jimmy Carter also slept here) can be seen in this image with the green roof just to the right of Stephen’s shoes.
