Second Vermont Pond Hockey Championships

Click HERE if you want to see more images from the 1st and 2nd Championships.

The 2nd Annual Vermont Pond Hockey Championships were held January 29 & 30, 2011 at the Lake Morey Resort in Fairlee, VT. The games were very spirited but also clean and friendly. It was 4-on-4 hockey. If there looks like there are too many players on the ice in the photo below it is because this image is composed of four separate photos and the players didn’t stay still for me.The photos that follow show the Golden Sap Bucket—not exactly the Stanley Cup but this is Vermont—awarded to the winners: Open Division – Trailer Park Boys, 40+ Division – Ferrisburgh Fire Puckers, and Recreation Division – Brew Ha-Ha.

Until I get a chance to edit and post more photos from the championships, here is a brief slide show of a goal scored by the Trailer Park Boys.

Photos from the First Pond Hockey Championship are HERE.

Skating at Lake Morey

I skated two laps around the 4.5 mile loop on Lake Morey today stopping occassionally to photograph a pair of ice boats, some people fishing, and some hockey players.  Here are a few photos.

Skate on Grafton Pond

A windy start on Lake Mascoma drove us to the more sheltered coves of Grafton Pond for a mid-day skate. It was interesting exploring the various arms of this pond on skates rather than kayak.  If you click the last image below you will be able to zoom and pan and see considerably more detail.

Skating on Lake Sunapee

This has been a great winter.  Soon after I bought some “nordic” free-heel ice skates the snow came covering the ponds and lakes.  It stayed cold for many weeks and cross country skiing was the best in years.  Then a few warm days and torrential rain ruined the snow.   But the rain created great ice on the rivers and lakes of the area.

Three of us entered Lake Sunapee Sunday just south  of Herrick’s Light and skated south on ice that was amazing in its variety.  By the time we circled Great Island and returned, we had experienced beautiful smooth black ice as well as some rough ice.  Everywhere the patterns and details in the ice fascinated us.  The ice was anything but silent.  It made low popping noises much like muffled firecrackers in the distance.  This was a bit unnerving, but eventually I got use to it, sort of..
