Red Foxes in Sunapee
At our last “Photo–SLR” class, Diana brought in a beautiful photo of a red fox. She told me where she found it, and I have been to that spot a number of times since then. Some trips yielded nothing, but during others I was rewarded with photos of three adults. So far no kits; they are presumably mostly staying near their den somewhere in the woods. On the right is a photo of the mated pair. I believe the male is in the rear and the vixen in the front. And below is their “helper” fox, most likely from last year’s litter. If they are behaving like most foxes, all three are caring for the young.
The red fox (Vulpes vulpes) is the largest of the true foxes. The gray fox (Urocyon cinereoargenteus) is normally larger but is not a “true” (Vulpes) fox. In this area the red fox is more common.
I expect to be back to the spot where I have seen the adults hoping to see the kits before they are so large they look like adults.

The photo below shows the fox that I believe is the vixen with a mole in her mouth.

Here are some of the photos I took of this trio in the last two weeks.
Fox and Turkeys
I still remember my astonishment the first time I saw a huge wild turkey lift seemingly effortlessly into flight. It glided away as gracefully as any bird, well almost any. Recently eight turkeys have been regulars in our yard along with a flock of common redpolls that numbers between 100 and 200 at various times.
The redpolls have been around since Christmas. They arrive at daybreak and proceed to consume sunflower seeds, tossing several on the ground for their pals below for every one they eat. Today a red fox joined the party. The fox ate the sunflower seeds the redpolls scattered and totally ignored the turkeys. They returned the snub from sometimes as close as 10 yards.
Here are some photos from today.
Dog Day in Woodstock
Saturday I led my Photo—SLR class on a walking tour of Woodstock, VT. We did a slow loop through town photographing whatever we fancied and hopefully learning in the process. We fancied dogs a lot, and we met some cute ones with friendly owners along the way. I was carrying two cameras so I could quickly switch between a very wide angle view and a telephoto magnifying a portion of the scene. It was fun photographing a few of the dogs up very close with a wide angle lens. But one I approached too quickly and the dog reacted. Here are some of the dogs I photographed.
