Second Week of October 2016

During the second week of October the foliage remained spectacular west, north, and east of the Upper Valley — I did not venture south of Hanover.  Well, I did make a short trip to Lebanon for some maple and birch photos.

I didn’t have to leave my Etna yard to make some motion blurs of white birch.

On Monday morning I headed to Norwich, Vermont to check out a few favorite spots. The foliage had not yet reached peak there, but it was quite nice in the early light.

Next up was Pomfret where I photographed some structures. The farm with the silo was Raymond’s. He was a great maple sugar artist before he passed away. I was once in his extremely modest sugar shack when a person came to stock up on syrup.  He drove from Downeast Maine each year just to buy from Raymond.  A sunset photo I took of Raymond’s Farm was used on a magazine cover years ago.

The sky and colors were nice in Barnard, VT.

Next morning was an early trip to Sugar Hill.

In Franconia I found a witch on a broomstick in the old Stone Iron Furnace.

The area around the Basin in Franconia Notch didn’t have bold reds, but it did have some nice lines and leaves.

In Woodstock, NH, I stopped at Beaver Pond — always a beautiful spot.

Birch, a stone wall, and a horse greeted me in Easton.

North Haverhill had some color around several farms just beyond the small town.

Heading south to Orford, I found some pleasing farm scenes.

In Lyme, a sailboat sat peacefully in Post Pond reflections.

On Wednesday, a friend and I toured some spots in central NH that few people visit and few photographers know about.  Our first stops were in Dorchester where we found many nice scenes.

We stopped in Piermont, NH before heading back east.

We spent quite a bit of time in Rumney, NH walking slowly around Quincy Bog. This is a wonderful spot for birds at the right time of year.

In Ellsworth there was a waterfall in the sun.  But no matter, it was actually only a water trickle.

Our final stop of the day was in Campton at a very nice pond that looks like it is worth a future kayak trip.

I ended the week with Jann.  We watched to conclusion of a race on the Connecticut River.  Then we visited the best farmer’s market around, in Norwich, VT. Finally a beautiful hike in the village of Norwich.

Here are some of the other photos I took during the Second Week of October during a great foliage season.
