Early Spring at Campbell Flats

I bookended May Day with two trips to Campbell Flats in Norwich, VT.  On April 29, I photographed a Green Heron and Lesser Yellowlegs. On May 2, I found an Eastern Kingbird, American Bittern, a pair of Blue-winged Teal, some Mallards (a common but still beautiful duck), and the Lesser Yellowlegs again.  On the way to Campbell Flats I found a Common Merganser on a log near the mouth of the Pompy.

The main attraction was a flooded area near the road on the east side of a field.  A Green Heron foraged with a Lesser Yellowlegs on the 29th.

On May 2, a Kingbird was present for a short while. I got a quick photo.

The Yellowlegs was still present apparently finding ample food.

Ducks were represented by a pair of Blue-winged Teal and some Mallards.

But for me the star of the show was an American Bittern. This was the third bittern I was able to photograph up close and personal in nine days on both sides of the Connecticut River within less than 7 miles as the heron flies.  The first bittern was in Thetford at the Zebedee Wetlands.  The second bittern was in Lyme, NH near Post Pond.

Here are three photos of the Campbell Flats bittern. It was a very overcast day which made for low contrast and nice reflections.
