Kencho’s Potatoes

Kencho was our driver in Bhutan. He kept up safe and supplied us with the best ara I have ever tasted at some of our evening meals. Two of the highlights of our trip were totally unplanned: a puja (Buddhist ceremony and party) at his uncle’s home and a tour of his tiny village of Phomdrong in central Bhutan. These will both be posted on this page in the next week or so, but for now I’m posting just one photo.

The traditional Buddhist home has three floors. The first is for grain and vegetables and/or animals. The second is where the people live. The third is open on the sides to dry grain. This photo is from the lowest level of Kencho’s home. The round objects are not rocks but potatoes. Shortly after this photo was taken we sat on the floor directly above this spot and enjoyed some ara with Kencho and his Mother at 11 AM.

For the photographers among us, this was shot handheld (hand braced) at ISO 800, f/5.6, 1/6 sec.
